University of Tennessee track and field team are already off to a great start this outdoor season with a ton of momentum as they head into the first home meet of the season.
The Vols will be hosting the 53rd annual Tennessee Relays meet. This meet will also have the senior recognition ceremony. The ceremony will recognize all the seniors on the team as this will be their last Tennessee Relays meet as a Vol.
One of the seniors that will be recognized is Joe Maxwell.
Joe Maxwell is a native Canadian who has had a very successful career as a Vol. The senior captain is looking forward to his last Tennessee relays because it’s been over a year since he’s competed due to the pandemic canceling last year’s outdoor season. Maxwell expressed that it’s going to be a nostalgic meet for him.
He said, “That’s been a great meet, I’ve done that every year since I’ve been here. So, it’s going to be a nostalgic moment, but I just want to make the most of it.”
Maxwell’s goals for this season are to compete consistently well and contribute to the team. He stated, “I always feel really felt great being a part of a team, I didn’t really have that in high school. So, to have that team aspect in college. so, compete consistently well and contribute to the team as much as I can.”
It’s almost surreal that this is Maxwell’s final year with the Vols as becoming a Vol was a dream come true for him.
Maxwell expressed that it had been a goal for him since he was about 11 or 12 years old to come to the United States on scholarship for track and field. Maxwell said, “when it came time for me to be recruited when I was a junior, senior in high school. Tennessee showed some interest in me, and they had met on a visit done here and after the visit, I just decided it was the place to be. So, I said with them after that.” And the rest has been history for the senior.
