Annual Hike the Hill in Heels raises awareness for sexual assault at the University of Tennessee

The University of Tennessee kicked off Sexual Assault Awareness Month strapping on some high heels and hiking across campus to raise awareness about sexual assault. At the fifth annual Hike the Hill in Heels event, participants equipped with high heels made their way across pedestrian walkway to The Hill on UT’s campus.

Festivities including t-shirt giveaways, a runway competition, and catering were waiting for participants at the end of the hike. Staff from the Sexual Assault Center of East Tennessee was also there to help educate participants on sexual assault and violence and share information about resrouces that are available to sexual assault survivors.

The university’s Title IX office released its annual update on reports of sexual misconduct last month. This report aims to provide an overview of prevention efforts, information about reports, and interim and support measures over the past academic year. According to the report, there were 111 cases of sexual misconduct reported on campus in 2018.

Hike the Hill in Heels is just the first of a number of events hosted on campus for Sexual Assault Awareness Month, as the University asks all Volunteers to get involved, reach out, join the conversation, and help change the statistics.

Car enthusiasts face the rain at Harper Auto Square’s Cars and Coffee

Thousands of car enthusiasts braved the rain last weekend to head out to Harper Auto Square’s Cars and Coffee at West Town Mall. This event is the largest Cars and Coffee event in the region with over 6,000 cars and 10,000 guests per event.

“It’s basically a gathering of car enthusiasts. Anywhere from a daily driver to an exotic car that’s out, you know, a couple times a year. It’s just a great gathering for people who love cars,” said Harper Auto Square’s Joey Collins.

Harper’s Cars and Coffee showcases a wide variety of cars and welcomes all cars and car fans to the event. Event attendees enjoy inventory on display from Harper Auto Square’s nine luxury dealerships, custom Cars and Coffee merchandise, and free dash plaques and refreshments complimentary of local sponsors.

Since its start, Harper Auto Square’s Cars & Coffee has grown from a 75 car event to the premier Cars and Coffee event in the Southeast. Despite the poor weather on Sunday, Cars and Coffee had the parking lot of West Town Mall filled with cars and event attendees.

“Turn out is good. It’s a rainy day, but it’s amazing how many people still show up,” said Collins. “I mean there’s a lot of cars out here that people didn’t expect to see today because of the weather, but it’s amazing the showing that we have even on a rainy day. It’s amazing.”
